Independent assessment of Land Trust's first year of work on the North Star
House
August 2003-Present (Feb. 2004): The Nevada County Land Trust took control of the North Star Historic District and the gift process was completed in December 2003. Upon gaining control the Land Trust demolished the non-historic additions, restored the roofing material (in order to stop water infiltration into the building), restored the chimneys, repaired selected structural members of the North Star House, and began emergency repairs on the other structures on the site. These repairs are in compliance with the idea of "mothballing" a historic structure until it can be restored. April 2003: During April 2003 the North Star property (approximately 760 acres) changed ownership. The new owners have expressed their interest in seeing that the North Star House and other historic aspects of the site be restored. The new owners, Sanderson Company can be reached at http://www.sandersoncompany.com/pages/1/index.htm.
In early 2003: the Nevada County Board of Supervisors transferred bequeathed funds to the Nevada County Land Trust (a non-profit organization based in Nevada County). The Land Trust's mission per their agreement with the Board of Supervisors will be to negotiate with the property owner in order to secure the house from further deterioration and to write for grant money that could be used to fully restore the house/grounds.
April 19, 2003: The Nevada County Land Trust will hold a series of meetings on the history and future of the North Star House and Historic District on Saturday, April 19th in the Houser Room at the Superintendent of Schools Office at Ridge Road and the Old Nevada City Highway.
