On November 16, our community gathered for a moment many years in the making: the National Significance Celebration at the North Star House. Surrounded by friends, volunteers, supporters, and local leaders, we honored the historic designation that officially recognizes the House for its importance in architecture, literature, women’s history, and equal rights.

The evening opened with remarks from our Board President, Paula Campbell, who spoke from the heart about the decades of dedication that brought us to this moment. As guests raised their glasses in a toast, Paula reflected on how far the House has come and the bright future that lies ahead.

We were grateful to welcome Howard Levine, a longtime friend and advocate of the North Star House. Howard shared memories from the early days of preservation efforts and spoke warmly about his late wife, Peggy Levine, whose dedication and belief in the House played a pivotal role in moving North Star forward. He reminded us how much of the House’s progress has been built on the steady efforts of those who cared deeply about its future, and how that same spirit continues to guide the work today.
The celebration continued with a special presentation from Congressman Kevin Kiley, who awarded us an official certificate recognizing the North Star House’s national importance. He spoke briefly about the value of preserving places that tell America’s story and the pride our region can take in this achievement.

Mary Jo Wainwright, a historian who has been supporting the House’s research efforts, shared a thoughtful and heartfelt reflection on what this recognition truly represents. She spoke about the deep layers of history held within the walls of North Star House and her words highlighted the legacy of Julia Morgan, Mary Hallock Foote, and all those who shaped the House’s place in history.

We were also honored to hear from Tim Kiser, City Manager of Grass Valley. Tim spoke about the City’s ongoing support for the North Star House and its restoration efforts. He emphasized the shared commitment to preserving this historic space and ensuring it remains active, accessible, and meaningful to the community.

The evening concluded with a beautiful speech from Grass Valley Mayor Hilary Hodge, who spoke about Julia Morgan’s impact on architecture and her personal love for North Star House. Mayor Hodge’s words captured the heart of the House: a place built with intention, artistry, and care, now recognized at the national level for its enduring significance.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported, volunteered, donated, and shared in the moment. Together, we are honoring the past, celebrating the present, and building the future.
