Remembering Joan Clappier: A Cherished Member of the North Star House Community

We were so saddened to learn of the passing of Joan Clappier, a former North Star Historic Conservancy volunteer who dedicated so much of her time, talents, and heart to North Star House.

Joan was involved in nearly every part of North Star House, contributing to historical research, the docent program, events, the website, marketing, and board service. She loved that there was always something new to take on, but what she treasured most was the people. The friendships, energy, and shared commitment among the volunteers made North Star House feel like a true community to her.

She brought an incredible amount of experience and curiosity to everything she did. A lifelong Northern Californian, she grew up in Oakland, graduated from Stanford, and went on to build a successful career as a software engineer. In 1989, she co-founded a software company that worked with businesses around the world.

When remote work gave her more freedom, Joan followed a longtime dream and moved to Grass Valley in 2000, where she started an alpaca ranch. She loved to sing and became involved with both Music in the Mountains and the Cornish Choir. She also served as a director and later administrator for Nevada County Grown and became a respected leader in California’s alpaca community. Joan brought curiosity, generosity, and genuine enthusiasm to everything she did.

We are honored that Joan’s family has chosen North Star Historic Conservancy for memorial donations in her name. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her.
