After the mines shut down and the Foote family moved away, the North Star House stood vacant for over 20 years. This beautiful Arts & Crafts building fell into severe disrepair—relentlessly vandalized and on the verge of collapse—until a group of dedicated locals recognized its historical significance and stepped in to save it.
Since 2006, the North Star Historic Conservancy has been steadily restoring the house, overcoming immense challenges of neglect, vandalism, and the harsh elements. Many might have walked away, but thanks to the commitment of our volunteers and the greater community, North Star House is reclaiming its place as a treasured historic landmark.
Before restoration work began, extensive research was conducted to ensure historical accuracy. Archival documents, blueprints, diaries, and photographs were collected, while local historians and preservation experts lent their expertise. A local architect with a background in historic restoration became a key member of the team. Though we are not required to have our work reviewed by the California Office of Historic Preservation, we continue to follow best practices from both California and the National Park Service’s preservation guidelines.
The restoration has been a collaborative effort. Skilled craftspeople led the structural repairs while mentoring volunteers who worked alongside them. Other volunteers researched and acquired period furnishings, as well as books and illustrations by Mary Hallock Foote. The landscape and gardens have been studied and revitalized with the help of local horticultural experts.
The first major step was replacing the roof, followed by critical upgrades to plumbing, electrical systems, and lighting. A professional caterer’s kitchen, office, and restrooms were then added. Over time, volunteers have meticulously restored the cedar-paneled walls, rebuilt the windows, replaced the damaged siding, and repaired the fireplaces.
Room by room, the North Star House is being revitalized—an enduring testament to the dedication of those who believe in preserving its rich history for generations to come.
