North Star House volunteer docents help bring the history of this remarkable property to life. We are currently looking for volunteers who would like to welcome visitors, lead tours, and help share the stories of the people, architecture, and preservation work connected to North Star House.
Docents play an important role in helping visitors understand that North Star House is more than a historic building. Each tour creates an opportunity to connect people with the history of the property and with the individuals who shaped it over time.
Become a North Star House Volunteer Docent
During historic tours of North Star House, docents guide visitors through the House while sharing stories about its architecture, restoration, and history.
Visitors may learn about architect Julia Morgan, writer and illustrator Mary Hallock Foote, engineer Arthur De Wint Foote, and the many other people whose lives became connected to the property over more than a century.
Docents also help visitors notice the details that make North Star House unique, from architectural features and historic rooms to the ongoing work being done to preserve and restore the property.
You do not need to be a historian to become a docent.
We are looking for people who enjoy learning, talking with others, and helping visitors feel comfortable and welcome. Training and support are provided, and new docents have opportunities to learn alongside experienced volunteers before leading tours independently.
Why Volunteer as a Docent?
Becoming a docent is a meaningful way to support North Star House while becoming part of a larger volunteer community.
Every tour helps keep the House active, visible, and connected to the public. Visitors leave with a better understanding of why the property matters, how it has changed over time, and why continued preservation is important.
That public connection supports the larger effort to restore and preserve North Star House. Preservation depends not only on physical restoration, but also on keeping the stories of the property accessible to the community.
Volunteering as a docent can also be a rewarding way to continue learning. Whether your interests are local history, architecture, historic preservation, Julia Morgan, the Foote family, or simply meeting new people, there is always more to discover.
